The manual era is shorter than you think. Automakers keep dropping stick shifts from new cars. "Someday I'll drive one" never actually happens. So we're building a place in Sapporo where you can just borrow a car on a whim, some random weekend. Starting one car at a time, as a rental. From there, we're planning a monthly plan you can drive all the time, and eventually, owning one car with a group of friends.
Only cars that make you say "I don't want to give it back." JDM sports cars you can actually drive on Hokkaido roads — the ND Roadster is bookable now. If manual makes you nervous, we've got AT options (Fairlady Z, IS F) and an EV (Tesla) in the pipeline too.

We're planning a monthly plan for driving the Roadster on weeknights, whenever you want. Set a monthly hour cap, think ¥20,000 a month and up. We'll launch it once enough people are asking for it. Spot rentals are already open in the meantime.

Hokkaido Strange Rentacar isn't a cut-rate rental company. We're a small rental shop that hands out each car like it's our own. Run by a single engineer-owner, so trust between us and every renter is everything.
Picking up trash, wiping down the windshield, for the next person. If that feels natural to you, welcome aboard. Cars here aren't disposable rentals, they're one car we all take care of together.
Small scratches from being used cars, a hand-built booking system, winter closures. This isn't a polished service. We want people who understand it's engineered by hand and want to help make it better through feedback.

Not "I'm paying, so...", but a relationship where the lender and the renter stay equal. We're not chasing over-the-top service, we value mutual respect instead.
A valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention along with your home country license, or a Japanese driver's license. Licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan can't be used with an IDP — those countries need an official Japanese translation of the license instead. Manual driving experience is required for MT cars such as the Roadster, and an automatic-only license (code 78) can't cover it; AT cars such as the Fairlady Z and Tesla are fine with one.
Drivers must be 21 or older with at least 1 year of driving experience.
Your passport, your home country driver's license, and either an International Driving Permit or an official Japanese translation of your license from an authorized issuer such as JAF. A translation from a private translation agency isn't valid.
Unlimited third-party liability insurance and vehicle damage coverage are included. A deductible applies; we'll send you the details when you book.
No track driving, commercial use, smoking in the car, or unauthorized modifications.
The ND Roadster is a two-seater, and the trunk holds about 130 litres — two carry-on bags, not two large suitcases. If you're arriving with checked luggage, leave it at your hotel or in a coin locker before you pick the car up.
The car is right-hand drive and Japan drives on the left. There's no mileage limit and you're free to drive anywhere in Hokkaido; taking the car off the island needs our approval first. Return it with a full tank. The car has an ETC transponder for toll roads, so bring your own ETC card if you have one, or use the cash lanes.
Hokkaido winters bring heavy snow and icy roads. Driving conditions can be challenging even for experienced drivers, so we may pause rentals during peak winter months. DM us on Instagram to check whether your dates are drivable.
The ND Roadster is ¥8,500 for up to 3 hours, ¥13,000 for up to 6 hours, ¥17,500 for up to 12 hours, ¥21,000 for up to 24 hours, plus ¥17,500 for each extra day, tax included. Insurance and vehicle coverage are included. If you drive on a foreign license, whether on an International Driving Permit or an official Japanese translation of it, an Inbound Pack fee of ¥5,500 per day applies (zero deductible and English support included).
Yes. We deliver to hotels and Airbnbs around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino at no extra charge, and collect the car from the same place when you're done. Arrange it in advance; it applies to rentals of 24 hours or more. Delivery outside central Sapporo, including New Chitose Airport, is quoted case by case.
