The manual era is shorter than you think. Automakers keep dropping stick shifts from new cars. "Someday I'll drive one" never actually happens. So we're building a place in Sapporo where you can just borrow a car on a whim, some random weekend. Starting one car at a time, as a rental. From there, we're planning a monthly plan you can drive all the time, and eventually, owning one car with a group of friends.
Only cars that make you say "I don't want to give it back." JDM sports cars you can actually drive on Hokkaido roads — the MX-5 is bookable now. If manual makes you nervous, an AT option (Fairlady Z) joins next spring.

Software development is my day job. Right after getting my license I bought an NA6 MX-5 (Miata), then moved on to a Starlet and a Swift Sport. Now, with a family and living in Hokkaido, I drive SUVs like a Jimny, an X5 and a Triton, plus a 4WD hot hatch, the Golf R.
Two-seat open cars and coupes like the MX-5 or the Z aren't practical, and you can't drive them through a Hokkaido winter. You want one, but owning one is a big step. So I figured: if I rent them out, I get to own them, and people who just want to try one get to drive them. That's why I bought an ND MX-5 in September 2026 and started this rental.
If you're visiting, I want you to enjoy Hokkaido's clear air, its wide and easy roads and the scenery that keeps changing, from a sports car. If you're coming from abroad, I want you to enjoy Japanese cars on Hokkaido's roads.
This isn't a cut-rate rental. It feels more like lending you my own car. It helps if you're the kind of person who'd pick up the trash and wipe the windows for the next renter. The cars are used, so there are small scratches, and I close for the snowy months. I built the booking system myself; software development is my day job. Since it's just me, I can be flexible when you ask for something. If it doesn't feel like a fit, just say so.
A valid International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention along with your home country license, or a Japanese driver's license. Licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan can't be used with an IDP — those countries need an official Japanese translation of the license instead. Manual driving experience is required for MT cars such as the MX-5, and an automatic-only license (code 78) can't cover it; AT cars such as the Fairlady Z are fine with one.
Drivers must be 21 or older with at least 1 year of driving experience.
Your passport, your home country driver's license, and either an International Driving Permit or an official Japanese translation of your license from an authorized issuer such as JAF. A translation from a private translation agency isn't valid.
Unlimited third-party liability insurance and vehicle damage coverage are included. If something happens, you're responsible for a deductible of ¥100,000 plus a non-operation charge of ¥50,000 if the car can still be driven back to us, or ¥150,000 plus actual towing/recovery cost if it can't. If you drive on a foreign license, the required Inbound Pack (¥5,500 per calendar day) brings both of those down to zero.
No track driving, commercial use, smoking in the car, or unauthorized modifications.
The MX-5 is a two-seater, and the trunk holds about 130 litres — two carry-on bags, not two large suitcases. If you're arriving with checked luggage, leave it at your hotel or in a coin locker before you pick the car up.
The car is right-hand drive and Japan drives on the left. There's no mileage limit and you're free to drive anywhere in Hokkaido; taking the car off the island needs our approval first. Return it with a full tank. The car has an ETC transponder for toll roads, so bring your own ETC card if you have one, or use the cash lanes.
Hokkaido winters bring heavy snow and icy roads. Driving conditions can be challenging even for experienced drivers, so we may pause rentals during peak winter months. DM us on Instagram to check whether your dates are drivable.
The MX-5 is ¥8,500 for up to 3 hours, ¥13,000 for up to 6 hours, ¥17,500 for up to 12 hours, ¥21,000 for up to 24 hours, plus ¥17,500 for each extra day, tax included. Insurance and vehicle coverage are included. If you drive on a foreign license, whether on an International Driving Permit or an official Japanese translation of it, an Inbound Pack fee of ¥5,500 per day applies (zero deductible and English support included).
Yes. We deliver to hotels and Airbnbs around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino at no extra charge, and collect the car from the same place when you're done. It applies to rentals of 24 hours or more; DM us on Instagram in advance to arrange it. Delivery outside central Sapporo, including New Chitose Airport, is quoted case by case.
